Technique, decision-making, attitude… We explain what coaches really assess at a tryout and how to prepare to show your best.
A tryout lasts only a few hours, but it can open an important door. Knowing what coaches watch for helps you arrive calm and show your best.
1. Technique under pressure
It is not about keepy-uppies. Scouts watch your first touch, one- and two-touch passing and dribbling when opponents are close.
2. Decision-making
Do you scan before receiving? Do you choose well between passing, dribbling or shooting? In Europe game intelligence is highly valued: body shape, finding space and keeping it simple when needed.
3. Intensity off the ball
Pressing after losing the ball, tracking back and talking to teammates says as much about you as a good dribble.
4. Attitude and body language
Arrive on time, listen to instructions, encourage others and bounce back quickly after a mistake. Coaches look for coachable players.
5. Fitness
You do not need to be the fastest, but you do need to keep the pace for the whole session. Arrive rested, hydrated and well fed.
6. Playing your position
Show what your role demands: a full-back who gets forward and recovers, a midfielder who offers, a striker who attacks space. If they move you to another position, accept it positively: they are evaluating you there too.
7. What to bring
- Boots for natural and artificial grass.
- Shin pads, spare clothes and water.
- ID and, if you are a minor, your parents' authorisation.
After the tryout
At VC Sports tryouts every player receives an assessment from our technical team and, when the profile fits, a programme proposal in Spain with Real Oviedo.
Upcoming tryout dates are confirmed each season: register and we will let you know before anyone else.
