What a young footballer really needs to train at a European club: level, age, documents and how to choose a serious programme.
Training in Europe is the dream of thousands of young footballers in the Americas. The good news is that there are now real, well-organised paths to get there; the bad news is that empty promises are everywhere too. This guide explains, step by step, how it works.
1. Define your goal: experience, education or exposure
Not every programme aims for the same thing. Before choosing, ask yourself what you want:
- Experience: 1 to 3 months training with European methodology to measure your level.
- Education: longer stays that combine daily training and school.
- Exposure: evaluation by coaches and scouts, with performance reports and video.
2. The ideal age
Most international programmes work with players aged 12 to 20. Between 14 and 17 is when players get the most out of European methodology: they already have a technical base and are still in full development.
3. The level you need
You do not need to be a star. Coaches value commitment, attitude and the ability to learn. That is why a good programme always starts with an assessment of your profile, not with a payment.
4. Documents and visas
For stays of up to 90 days, many Latin American nationalities do not need a visa to enter Spain, although minors always need travel authorisation from their parents. Longer stays require a student visa. We explain it in detail in our visa guide.
5. How to spot a serious programme
- It has real backing from a professional club, by name.
- It tells you in writing what is included: housing, meals, medical insurance, transport and supervision.
- It does not guarantee a professional contract: nobody honest can promise that.
- It puts you in touch with families who have already been through it.
6. The process with VC Sports
VC Sports is an official partner of Real Oviedo. The process has four steps: registration, profile assessment by our technical team, matching you with the right programme, and travelling to Spain. The assessment is free of charge.
Talent needs opportunities. Our job is to make that opportunity real, safe and well supported.
